I found an alternative to the candyshell. It's from Capdase. It comes with a cover which is softer than the candy shell but firmer than rubber covers. In addition it comes with a cushion pouch which can be attached to your belt and a small clip on stand. At a price of R139 I opted for the Capdase. Time will tell if I made a good choice.

If you aren't using the Apple headphones I can understand how the the small hole would be an issue.

All my buttons make perfect contact, or at least work as I expect them to when I push them.

I tried a case with a cable management system before, but the extra bulk was just too annoying.

I loved the Candyshell - but the small headphone hole was the dealbreaker for me. Also, the one I bought did not seem to make proper contact with the volume buttons, so I gave it back.

Which is a shame really, because I think it is the best case on the market. I also did a review of it over at my blog: http://www.mpieters.com/2009/11/some-cool-iphone-cases-i-have-come.html
